Sheffield is the principal financial and commercial centre for South Yorkshire and the North East Midlands. The city is the fourth largest in England with an urban population of 640,720 and a district population of 551,800 (Census 2011).
Sheffield lies to the west and within four miles of the M1 Motorway (Junctions 33 and 34 north and south) and within 6 miles and 25 miles of the M1/M18 intersection and the M1/M62 intersection respectively. The M62 provides ready access to the Humber ports and to Lancashire. To the South the M1 links with the M42, which provides access to the West Midlands conurbation within an hour’s drive. Manchester, Leeds/Bradford, Sheffield/Doncaster and East Midlands International Airports are also readily accessible, whilst London is within two and a half hours by Inter City Rail Link.

Major employers within the city include The Royal Hallamshire Hospital, The Northern General Hospital and Irwin Mitchell with 6,000, 5,000 and 1,800 employees respectively.
